German automaker BMW brings back to the States a diesel engine in the new model year. Both the X5 SUV and the 3-Series sedan will be available with the new 265-horsepower, 3-liter, turbocharged, diesel, inline six-cylinder that puts out an amazing 425 foot-pounds of torque. This engine meets emissions requirements in all 50 states. The 3-Series also gets a mild appearance freshening in front and back and the new generation of iDrive information technology inside. Meantime, later in the model year, the flagship 7-Series sedan will debut as a newly styled car with new suspension and the 400-horsepower, 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that's already in the BMW X6. Look for BMW's Z4 two-seater to end production this year. .

We start with the BMW X6, which must receive my inaugural What Were They Thinking Of award. Have you seen one? No, and I doubt you ever will because in a world that’s plagued with recession and run by people who believe the world’s polar bears are up at the North Pole sipping pina coladas and slapping on the factor five, it is surely the most inappropriate piece of corporate thinking since Sir Clive Sinclair said: "Yes. The electric slipper. That’s what people want . . ." However, I cannot say the BMW X6 is the worst car of the year, partly because I have not yet driven it and partly because it cannot possibly be worse than the Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Unless it smells of slurry and the radio is jammed on Rap FM. The Sebring is an extraordinary car.

BMW X6 comes in two trim levels: xDrive35i and xDrive50i. Both trims come standard with a moonroof, 19-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers, leather upholstery, power front seats with driver memory settings, parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control and the iDrive multimedia interface. Also standard is a 12-speaker audio system with a CD/MP3 player and an auxiliary audio input. One can further equip the X6 with a variety of options. The technology package adds a voice-activated navigation system with a rearview camera and real-time traffic information. An optional sport package adds adaptive drive (which adds increased control over body roll) and bumps the wheel size up to 20 inches. The premium package, according to Edmos motoring experts, adds BMW assist and auto-dimming mirrors.

The finalists for Urban Truck of the Year are the: BMW X6, Dodge Ram, and Ford Flex. According to Arv Voss of Auto Impressions, "BMW's X6 is a distinctive combination of the qualities people love about SUVs, with a level of performance typically associated only with high-end sports sedans. That it introduces a number of firsts for BMW — brand known for innovation — makes the BMW X6 even more significant." The all-new Dodge Ram considerably raises the bar in the pickup truck arena. The interior alone advances the state of the pickup by several generations. The new coil-spring rear suspension both smoothes its ride and improves its handling, while the storage bins in the sides of the cargo box are the sort of thing that everybody wonders why nobody thought of a long time ago," enthuses Warren Brown of the Washington Post.
