The BMW was westbound on Spring Mountain Road. According to the witnesses, the BMW failed to stop for a red traffic signal and entered the intersection. The front of the Nissan struck the left side of the BMW. None of the vehicle occupants were wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicles.

The male driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel. The female passenger and BMW driver were transported to University Medical Center where they were admitted in critical condition. It appears speed and failure to stop for a red traffic signal is the contributing factors in this accident. The accident remains under investigation by the LVMPD Accident Investigation Detail. This was the 109th fatal traffic accident in LVMPD's jurisdiction this year.

A promising start to the season suggested BMW could mount a serious championship challenge to both Ferrari and particularly McLaren in the constructors championship, and duly delivered the team the maiden victory they were looking for in Canada, with Robert Kubica putting to rest memories of his horrifying crash at the Old Paddock Hairpin at the same venue 12-months previously.

Shortly after this breakthrough however, the team's management decided to focus all development onto the 2009 car, and as McLaren and Ferrari continued to develop their 2008 cars through the year resulted in BMW losing momentum in the championship race, much to the public bemusement of the drivers - Kubica being most critical of the decision outwardly. Only time will tell if this decision has worked out in the long term and firmly established BMW as serious championship contenders.

Following Prime Minister Patrick Manning's visit to Germany this year, where he visited the BMW group, the evaluation committee was asked to consider a proposal from that group.

"In re-evaluating the alternatives, the BMW option was not cost effective. BMW proposed the purchase of 100 cars in order to have the free usage of an additional 100 cars (total 200)," he said.

However, he said the free use of 100 cars was based on the company being granted full exemptions of all taxes and duties for both the purchase and resale of all the vehicles in Trinidad and Tobago. Browne said the purchase price for 100 vehicles was $33,176,460.

"The loss to Government if duties and taxes were to be exempted based on free usage for the 100 vehicles offered is $32,968,568, making a total of $66.1 million for the BMW option," he said.
