Freightliner Chassis Corp. announced a series of layoffs this summer, resulting in the loss of some 325 jobs, and BMW supplier MAU Inc. made plans to lay off up to 733 workers this month.

Building in housing developments slowed, and in some cases, stopped all together, and numerous restaurants and small businesses failed.

All the layoffs resulted in elevated unemployment rates across South Carolina, with Spartanburg County's rate reaching its highest point in more than five years at 8.4 percent.

Cherokee and Union counties saw double-digit figures.

With the 2009 Audi A6 facelift now on sale and the upcoming 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class out in the open, attention now turns to the next-generation BMW 5-Series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-Series Sedan and Touring wagon remain crucial vehicles in BMW's lineup and with the next-gen versions less than a year away speculation about the final design has been heating up. The new 5-Series Sedan is set to arrive in late 2009 for the 2010 model year and heavily disguised prototypes have already been seen testing around the streets of Munich. These latest shots give us a first look at the Touring model, which is expected to arrive roughly 12 months after the launch of the Sedan. While heavily camouflaged, previous computer generated renderings give us a clear indication as to what to expect for the new executive wagon.

Under Director Kurt Donath, BMW gained a manufacturing licence to produce pots and pans, agricultural equipment and bicycles but behind the scenes, company management was working on plans to return to motorcycle production. In 1946 BMW was given approval to produce motorcycles up to 125cc. Work began on the creation of a two-stroke Boxer and the R 10 was quickly developed to a running prototype. Donath, believing that the capacity restriction would be lifted to 250cc, had Alfred Böning and his engineering team secretly begin work away from Munich on a new motorcycle. This would be a difficult task as all the production plans and technical drawings were either destroyed or located at the Eisenach plant, which was in the Soviet-controlled sector and out of BMW control. A pre-war R 23 was located and it was disassembled and every part measured in order to produce new plans.
